Livestrong just made my day

So, in an attempt to get my life under control and address my weight, I got the Livestrong app to track my caloric intake and physical activity. Well, jokingly, I did a quick search and found out that, yes, sex is in the list of physical activites with three levels of intensity.

P.S. Also as part of this attempt, I got a physical and had some blood tests done. Still waiting for the results since my doctor and I are playing phone tag. I kinda hope something is wrong with me so that I could finally get an answer as to why losing weight is such an issue with me.

Oh god, I'm such a nerd

First, I must state that I have reached a new level of nerdliness just by having an iPhone app that provides me SSH access to my computers on the network.

What really makes me a nerd is that I am excited that I figured out how to do tab completion. I'm hopeless and I know it.

EDIT: Oh god, it's worse. Now I have my VNC server activated on my computer (which I didn't know Macs came packaged with until I read it on the intarwebs) and can now remote desktop into my computer from my iPhone. If only I could get a public IP for my network connection, then I'd be able to VPN to my home network and administer my computers remotely from my iPhone. I think I have to be put on the list for nerliest person ever.

I'd like to weigh in on the VP debate if I may. I must preface by saying that after what I had read about the stances and previous exploits of Governor Palin, I was (and still am) biased against her but I did try to give her a fair shake.

Joe Biden looked like a seasoned politician last night. He was cool, in control, and a real pro. I felt that he harped on some of the past transgressions of John McCain a little too long and sometimes seemed a little too forced in hitting the positions of Obama while tying them in with his own opinions. Overall, I thought he was substantive but came off a little tight but professional.

Sarah Palin scares the living shit out of me. Well, more disturbs than scares. Here's why; what I saw last night was George W. Bush as an attractive, middle aged, woman. In the Bush interviews, he was great at taking a question, making some kind of remark that made him seem like just "one of the guys," using the chance to attack his opponent and then talk about one of his trained talking points while not really answering the question. I saw Palin do a lot of that last night; she was great at deflecting the actual question and pressing play on the little tape recorder in her head to say the things she was trained to say and nothing else substantial that was her own, independent thought. I was also deeply disturbed by her implication that the McCain camp espouses Dick Cheney's claim that the Vice President is a member of the Legislative branch. That alone is enough to make me never in a million years want to vote for them. Is it hypocritical for a political campaign saying that they want to reign in "Big Government" but support ideals that expand the power of the executive? Sounds like they are only interested in decreasing the power of congress so as to not impair the ideas of the President, like DIck Cheney wants.

I want to also talk about what people say was her strength: folksy. Even the word folksy fills me with ire. Call me crazy but I like having intelligent, intelligible people in high ranking positions, not someone who has anecdotes about soccer moms and hockey moms and family time do distract from the lack of substance of the actual answer. There were times that I admit that she did seem informed but in my memory they seemed few and far between.

Criticizing both candidates, I felt there were a couple questions where the answers from both sides were total cop-outs. Gay relationships were one thing. I personally don't care for the notion that marriage is between a man and a woman because that's how religious institutions define it. As far as the law is concerned, in my opinion, marriage is a joining of two financial estates for the purpose of shared risk. I did somewhat lean toward Biden's answer of civil equality but still thought it was a total cop-out. Marriage also protects each partner from being screwed by the actions of his/her alternate partner and to say to homosexuals, "Get married so that you can be equal but be mindful that the risk is still the same," seems more viable to me than politicians fighting about what rules will apply and what rules do not. Palin's 30 seconds af trying to convince the nation that she's not homophobic before her answer that she does not support homosexual unions seemed, well... odd. It reflected in my mind of people that I've dealt with that say, "I'm not homophobic but I don't really like gay people." I was going to talk about Israel as well but I don't think I will. Lets just say that the two state solution irks me a little.

Overall I say Biden >> Palin. Now, the metric on Palin that she performed well by not failing completely is a total crock of shit (the definition amuses me) and reminds me of a 2004 political cartoon about a debate between Kerry and Bush that went a little like this (in text because I can't find it im print).

John Kerry: Well actually light displays the physical properties of both a particle and a wave as it is able to impart physical energy to and even disturb other physical particles like a particle but also has the transmission and dispersion properties of a wave.
Media: WILL YOU LOOK AT THAT?! GEEZ, CAN'T THIS GUY EVER MAKE UP HIS MIND?!
Moderator: President Bush, would you please spell cat?
George W. Bush: Uh geez that's kind of a tough one. Uh, K-, A-, T.
Media: (Applause) It wasn't perfect but would you look at that. Good show. (More Applause)

I want to finish by saying that all four candidates talk about reform but reform for the benefit of a few is arguably negative reform. I site this as an example which I know has been posted before.

I happened to catch what I believed was a very interesting House Judiciary Committee session on Executive Power and the Bush administration. It seemed to be a session to determine whether there has been enough solid evidence of the Executive Branch's conduct toward the other two branches of government to warrant a double whammy impeachment inquiry against the president and vice president.

Anyone with nothing better to do, it is being re-aired on CSPAN at 8 pm. Warning that it's a 6 hour session. Get it on your DVR if you're interested or are not willing to wait up until 2 in the morning watching the whole thing.
